As a sophomore at Boston University, I took a class in statics (analyzing the stresses on and internal forces of things that are not accelerating), "EK301-Mechanics I". This class was a mostly physics based engineering class, requiring a lot of math and drawing free body diagrams. However, this class had a final project, the (in)famous Truss Project. For this project, I worked with a group of my peers in order to design a truss out of straws that could hold the most weight. This project required meeting certain constraints and completion by a certain deadline, testing material strength, quantitatively analyzing the performance of the truss via hand calculations and computer simulations, and general design and teamwork. On the last day of classes, we tested our truss to see how well our design was engineered.
